When I was a child I longed to be older
to choose what I wanted to do
to have power and authority to go and do as I pleased.
My world was limited,
my choices seemed few.
Still, I knew my neighborhood, at least a slice of it.
I rode my bicycle where I pleased.
The world was a huge place, and I expected I would eventually move through it
like I move through my neighborhood on my bike.
Today, I am older.
I can go, literally, almost anywhere in the world that I please.
But I do so only rarely.
Instead of moving through the world like a kid on a bicycle
I seem to stand in one spot, and the world moves past me.
